Itinerary: |

DAY 1,2&3: USA - NAIROBI
Our trip to Nairobi will begin today with our flight
to Africa. Day 2 will be taken up in transit. Upon
arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi this
morning, it’s only a 30-minute ride to the luxurious
Safari Park Hotel. Our hotel is one of Nairobi’s
showpieces; more than a hotel -it’s a beautiful
resort, set in 64 acres of exotic gardens. The
resort has two swimming pools, and more than six
restaurants. No group activities have been planned
for this morning to allow for rest from our long
flight. This afternoon we will enjoy a city tour of
Nairobi with its sparkling modern buildings and
plentiful markets with fruit, vegetables and
handicrafts. This evening we‘ll be greeted with a
Welcome Dinner at the hotel. (Inflight meals,D)
DAY 4: NAIROBI - “THE ARK”
One of the things we are sure to appreciate each day
is the hearty, English-style breakfast, a legacy of
colonial times. Bacon and eggs, cereal, juice, toast
and preserves are served daily. After breakfast, we
board the mini-vans which will be our chief mode of
transportation in Kenya, as they are for everyone,
resident and visitor alike. We will head north to
the Aberdare Country Club, a jumping-off point for
“The Ark”. After lunch at the club, we set out for
what is surely one of the world’s most unique
hotels. The wooden structure looks just like every
picture one’s ever seen of Noah’s ancient vessel.
The adjacent water hole and salt lick act as a
magnet for abundant wildlife, attracting many
hundreds of animals nightly. Photographers are very
pleased to find that there are open viewing areas on
all floors, giving them clear shots of the game. We
can watch this fascinating show until dawn. Our
rooms can be “buzzed” to wake us when anything
exciting happens or when an animal appears that we
would like to see. (B,L,D)
DAY 5: SAMBURU GAME RESERVE
After breakfast we head north again, with mighty Mt.
Kenya on one side and the Aberdare Mountain Range on
the other. Just south of the little town of Nanyuki,
we’ll cross the equator. A large signboard marking
the spot is located on the roadside, and we can have
our picture taken to record our crossing. We
gradually descend onto the plains, dropping about
2,500 feet in altitude, and head for the Samburu
Game Reserve. We drive out into the wilds of Samburu
later in the afternoon; Samburu is named after the
Samburu tribe, a pastoral people. We’ll see them
grazing their herds on the sparse vegetation as we
go to and from the reserve. Roughly translated, the
word samburu means “butterfly”. Some people think
this may refer to the tribe’s ceaseless search for
water and grass in these semi-desert homelands. (B,L,D)
DAY 6: SAMBURU
Breakfast at Samburu is buffet style and usually
shared with the birds. They come right up to the
breakfast table to be fed. Experience the excitement
of an early morning game drive with the afternoon at
leisure at the lodge. In the late afternoon, enjoy
another fascinating game drive. (B,L,D)
DAY 7: SAMBURU - LAKE NAVISHA
After a hearty breakfast this morning we set off for
our next destination, beautiful Lake Nakuru in the
Rift Valley, home to has the world’s largest
concentration of flamingos. At times there are as
many as one million flamingos here -- a spectacular
sight! We then go to Hippo Point, where several
hippos are known to live. If we are lucky, we may
catch one bathing by the shore. Lake Nakuru is also
a refuge for rhinos (particularly prized by poachers
for their valuable horn). We stay tonight at Lake
Navisha. (B,L,D)
DAY 8: MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE
Today we head south for one of the most famous of
all the game reserves of Africa - the Masai Mara
Game Reserve. This is the northern extension of the
Serengeti Plains that stretches into Kenya. The Mara
is justly famous, and experts agree that it is the
best reserve for game viewing. It has more lions
than any other reserve, as well as cheetahs,
leopards and rhinos. We are sure to see zebras,
wildebeests and many types of antelope. We will make
our game drives in the territory populated by the
Masai. Our destination in the Mara is Mara Sopa
Lodge. What might surprise us is how sophisticated
our accommodations are. Here at Mara Sopa we’ll
sleep in thatched-roof “bandas” that have only their
exteriors in common with the traditional huts of the
Kikuyu tribe. Inside, they have delightful decor,
four-poster beds, private facilities and a level of
comfort that’s enchanting. The lodge has a swimming
pool and even laundry service for its guests. (B,L,D)
DAY 9: MASAI MARA
The early morning game drives are especially
amazing. After breakfast we’ll have a full day in
the Masai Mara Game Reserve and take another game
drive in the late afternoon. We will spend a second
night at Mara Sopa Lodge. (B,L,D)
DAY 10: MASAI MARA - NAIROBI
This morning we’ll leave the Mara and return to
Nairobi. After checking into the Safari Park Hotel,
we’ll have the rest of the day to do whatever
interests us most. (B)
DAY 11: NAIROBI
Our morning in Nairobi is at leisure. Today’s
excursion is sure to be a highlight of the trip.
We’ll visit Mrs. Evelyn Mitchell’s home and garden
at Limuru, about an hour’s drive from Nairobi.
Enroute we will enjoy lunch at the famous
“Carnivore” Restaurant. Mrs. Mitchell’s father
introduced coffee into East Africa and pioneered the
tea plantations, which can be seen all around the
Limuru area. The garden is splendid at any time of
the year. Even the least knowledgeable amateur
gardener can locate and identify 30 of the possibly
50 varieties of flowers, which grow in profusion.
Upon our return to Nairobi we will have a Farewell
Dinner together - a time to share our memories of
this wonderful trip. (B,L,D)
DAY 12: NAIROBI - USA
Our flight this morning will take us back through
Europe and on back to the USA. (Inflight meals) |
